Car Seat Expiration Estimator
Car seats don't last forever — plastics fatigue, harnesses fray, and safety standards move on. Pick your seat, enter the manufacture date stamped on it, and get an estimated expiration window computed from manufacturer-published lifespan rules.
Last reviewed: 2026-08-26. Recall status checked 2026-08-26 against CPSC & NHTSA databases: no active recalls affect this tool's guidance. Standards context: every US seat must conform to FMVSS 213; JPMA-certified seats also meet ASTM practices, and the AAP advises retiring any seat past its expiration or crash history.
Based on manufacturer-published lifespan rules; verify physical label. Where our verified records hold no published lifespan rule for a model, the result is an honest UNKNOWN — we do not guess safety dates. Source register in Data Sources.
Estimate your car seat's expiration window
Every seat model above appears in our evidence database with manufacturer-documentation provenance. Only models with a published lifespan rule in those verified records produce a date estimate — everything else returns UNKNOWN by design. For depth on individual models, see our convertible car seat rankings and the Graco Extend2Fit review.

What our verified records hold today
| Seat | Published lifespan rule in verified records | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Britax B-Safe Gen2 (infant) | 6 years from date of manufacture — Britax product page (us.britax.com, retrieved 2026-08-23) | Rule published |

UNKNOWN does not mean "never expires." Every car seat has an expiration — it simply isn't in our verified records for that model, so this tool refuses to invent one. The physical label or instruction manual is authoritative for every seat.
Where to find the expiration on your actual seat
- The date of manufacture is stamped on the seat itself — molded into the plastic shell or printed on a white sticker, commonly on the underside/base, the back, or a side of the shell. It may read "Date of Manufacture," "DOM," or "MFD."
- The expiration is stated in the instruction manual and often on the same label or molded into the shell ("Do not use after …"). If the manual is lost, manufacturers publish current manuals on their support sites — for example, our UPPAbaby MESA V3 review documents locating the official manual PDF.
- If you can't find a date at all: treat the seat as unverified history. Combined with unknown crash history, most safety instructors advise replacing it rather than guessing.
- Never use a seat that has been in a crash, regardless of its expiration date, and register your seat with the manufacturer so recall notices reach you. Check current status via NHTSA (nhtsa.gov/recalls) or our recall monitoring page.
