Short answer: the PIPA rx ships with Nuna's RELX™ base in the box — you never have to buy a base for your first car. The same RELX base is sold separately for $250 when a second car needs one, and it clicks into every current PIPA-series seat except the baseless-by-design PIPA urbn. On the stroller side there are exactly three hardware types: nothing at all for Nuna frames (adapters come in the stroller box), Nuna's own ring adapter for the Bugaboo Fox, and one stroller-specific pair each for the UPPAbaby Vista/Cruz and Minu V3. That's the whole ecosystem.

Nuna's US infant line is currently three seats plus one base-free outlier — and which base lands in your box depends entirely on which seat you pick:

"Can I use my old PIPA base with a new PIPA rx?"

This is the question that sends people down rabbit holes, so here is exactly what the documentation supports: Nuna's PIPA rx manual documents one base — the RELX — alongside two base-free modes (vehicle belt, aircraft). No legacy-base path appears anywhere in the rx instructions, and Nuna's retail pages pair the rx exclusively with the RELX. If you're handed down an older PIPA-series base from a lite or earlier Aire, we found no manufacturer documentation blessing it with the rx — treat that combination as unsupported until Nuna says otherwise, and use the documented belt-only install in the meantime.

The reverse direction is documented: buy the $250 standalone RELX and it officially "connects with PIPA aire, PIPA rx, and PIPA aire rx." So a family mixing an aire and an rx across two cars can share one spare RELX between them — just never the urbn, which takes no base at all.

Which base comes in the box? (per seat)

• PIPA rx → RELX base included. The product is literally named "PIPA rx infant car seat with RELX base" on nunababy.com.
• PIPA aire rx → RELX base included ("PIPA RELX™ base included"), plus an integrated anti-rebound panel.
• PIPA aire → legacy-style PIPA™ series base included — the budget-friendly way into the click-in ecosystem, upgradeable to the RELX later.
• PIPA urbn → no base, no base option: belt-only by design.

Practical translation: if your rx lives in one car, you're done on day one. Grandparents' car, second household, rideshare-heavy life? Either add a $250 RELX or lean on the documented belt install — many city families do both, keeping the base in the primary car and going belt-only in taxis.

The adapter side: three kinds of hardware

Bases stay in the car. Getting the rx onto a stroller is a completely separate purchase decision, and the rx manual draws the same line: "Only use with Nuna strollers or appropriate Nuna adapters designed for use with other strollers." Those adapters come in exactly three forms:

• Native Nuna pairing — zero extra parts. The rx "connects with all Nuna strollers," and the car-seat adapters ship inside the stroller box. This covers MIXX next, TAVO next/TAVO, TRIV next/lx, DEMI next/icon, SWIV, the TRVL family — and Nuna sells factory bundles like the MIXX next + PIPA rx travel system.
• Nuna's own ring adapter — Bugaboo Fox. The rare cross-brand case where the seat maker builds the part: Nuna's PIPA-series adapter for the Bugaboo Fox® is "tested, endorsed and manufactured by Nuna." Remove carrier and adapter before folding.
• Stroller-specific pairs — UPPAbaby. Vista V2/V3 (and 2015–2019) and Cruz V2/V3 (and 2015–2019) share one Maxi-Cosi®/Nuna®/Cybex/Clek® pair — UPPAbaby names "Nuna® PIPA rx" explicitly on its list. The Minu V3 uses a physically different pair (product no. 0901-MXA-WW). Vista parts do not fit the Minu; buy for your frame.

Rx plus a second car

Two documented paths: the $250 standalone RELX (identical hardware, works with aire/aire rx too) or disciplined belt-only installs. Frequent second-car users usually buy the base; occasional borrowers usually don't.

Rx plus a non-Nuna stroller

Vista/Cruz: one $49.98 pair. Minu V3: its own pair. Bugaboo Fox: Nuna's ring adapter. Anything else: check our full compatibility guide before assuming — most frames simply don't take the rx.

Taxis and flights

Does the Nuna PIPA rx come with a base?

Yes — the RELX base is included in the box. Nuna's own product page says "Includes our innovative PIPA RELX™ base," and the product is listed as "PIPA rx infant car seat with RELX base." You do not need to buy a base for your first car.

How much is a second RELX base?

$250.00 direct from nunababy.com (listed price checked 2026-08-25). It's the identical base that ships with the rx and aire rx, and Nuna states it connects with the PIPA aire, PIPA rx and PIPA aire rx.

Can I use an older PIPA base with the PIPA rx?

We found no manufacturer documentation supporting any base other than the RELX with the rx — the rx manual covers only the RELX plus belt-only and aircraft installs. Nuna no longer even lists the old base standalone; its former URL redirects to the RELX page. Use the documented belt install rather than guessing with a hand-me-down base.

Does the RELX base fit other Nuna seats?

Yes: Nuna says the RELX is compatible with all PIPA-series infant seats except the PIPA urbn, which never uses a base. Concretely, that's the PIPA aire, PIPA rx and PIPA aire rx in today's US lineup.

Can the PIPA rx go baseless?

Yes, and it's a first-class install mode, not a workaround: the manual includes a full "Child Restraint Only Install" section, Nuna markets the rx for taxis because it installs with a vehicle seat belt alone, and the seat is FAA-certified for aircraft use with or without the base.

Do I need an adapter to put the PIPA rx on a stroller?

Does the base attach to the stroller too?

No — the RELX base stays in the car, always. On a stroller, the carrier shell clicks directly onto the stroller's adapters; the base plays no part. That separation is why one base can serve multiple cars while the carrier travels between car and stroller freely.
